Nazeing Common Cricket Club
Replacement Cricket Pavilion
Set in an elevated position, the site of Nazeing Common Cricket Club provides an idyllic setting for enjoying the game while embracing the long panoramic views across the countryside. Despite this, the clubhouse and pavilion were becoming dilapidated and in need of modernisation so, when presented with an opportunity to construct improve this, EPA were appointed to design a replacement building.
Our design approach was established very quickly where the building should be designed to allow the cricket to be enjoyed while appreciating the sites wonderful location. The location of the pavilion, the layout and the design of the roof form focuses the spectator experience towards the field of play. The cantilevered roof gives the building protection from the elements as well as offering natural shading to the internal spaces to negate the need for artificial cooling.
Part of our design approach was to allow the structure of the building to be understood and appreciated by exposing the exterior timber columns and the internal scissor trusses in the main clubhouse. The celebration of the buildings structure is continued through the interior designs with exposed blockwork walls and a pared back approach to the remaining interior finishes. Natural timber external cladding and a natural slate roof, finish the material palette where the composition of materials create a calm, warm and comfortable environment.
