Great Slamseys Main Barn

The conversion places significant emphasis on celebrating its existing structure with the interior being deliberately stripped back and minimal, allowing the original timber framework and architectural details to take center stage against a clean, white backdrop. This design philosophy not only highlights the barn's historic charm but also creates a striking contrast that accentuates its main features.

Adopting sustainable practices, Great Slamseys Barn has been thermally upgraded using breathable construction methods which ensure improved energy efficiency for the building to function as a home while preserving the building's structural integrity and fabric. The original structural openings have been carefully utilised throughout the conversion to further protect the barn's historical fabric, avoiding unnecessary alterations. Contrary to the common practice of painting Essex barns black, the external weatherboard of Great Slamseys Barn has been left in its natural state where, unusually, some of the barns external wall finishes were found this way prior to the conversion. With this being an unusual characteristic to the typical ‘Essex Barn’, we felt it an honest approach to take in order to respect the individuality of the building,

Internally, the barn retains its agricultural character through the use of loose furniture and fittings, including the kitchen elements. These items are designed to be flexible and moveable, ensuring that the space and volume remains true to its original function and purpose as a large open space. This design strategy not only maintains the barn’s historical narrative but also allows for adaptable and functional living spaces.
